Opium of the masses

"Religion is the opium of the masses" Carl Marx
.

I suppose this is true, for without it, we would most surely all be shaking and quivering as a drug addict for fear of the cascading reality would set in. I suppose religion to be more of a prescription drug prescribed every Sunday with no side effects the rest of the week. Where I would argue, Marx, is that everyone is sustained on something, whether it is religion or not.

If one believes that there is no God, or if there is, they want nothing to do with him, then they are on another sort of prescription. This one consists of the occasional mental battle to reapprove their ideas and reaffirm how senseless those people are who believe there is more than this. This prescription must be administered far more frequently for fear that they may be wrong and there is a final judgment is petrifying to them.

Still yet, there is another sort of prescription, this one of spirituality, which is at one time all religion and no religion, for in the affirmation of all, there is a belief in None. This prescription is more periodic but far more potent, for patients can go weeks or even months without medication, yet when they start to get the itch. It must be fulfilled (this is often seen in spiritual revelation, retreat, or cleansing). For a while, it satisfies them, yet in the end, It always leaves them dry.

Another group well they are in a sort of non-drug-induced coma, for without a drug and without a Hope, they are caught in a sort of gray area. These patients, once knowing the real thing, have been slowly disengaged, and what they have found to be the substitute are momentary pleasures. They never dive too deep into what they believe, for they are partially asleep. While they are sleeping these momentary pleasures and peace of mind satisfy for when not engaged, they revert back to their resting state. Yet this voluntary coma has a rude awakening.

So where is the real life we were designed for, the undefiled and unmedicated conscious? Surely, it is not in religion, unbelief, spirituality, or the unthinking, for these are all masks of the real thing. They are simply brain stimulants for living, yet if these are put aside, we will see that we were made in the image of life, no prescription needed for the perfect medication is written on the hearts of men, and once we see this, we will fully understand that there is no prescription ever needed just faith.
